Insulin resistance is thought to be at the core of PCOS, causing many negative flow-on effects of the condition. With this post, I want to look at three of the most impactful symptoms of insulin resistance.

1️⃣ HIGH TESTOSTERONE LEVELS
High insulin levels cause the ovaries to overproduce male-sex hormones, called androgens. This leads to an excessive amount of testosterone in the female body, causing issues such as acne, male-like hair growth, and male-like hair loss.

Insulin also reduces the production of SHBG (sex-hormone binding globulin), a protein that attaches itself to free testosterone in your bloodstream which helps to regulate testosterone levels. Less SHBG means higher testosterone.

2️⃣ WEIGHT GAIN
Insulin resistance triggers the body to store a larger portion of the calories you eat from your diet directly as stored body fat. This is why unexplained or sudden weight gain is often seen in women with PCOS.

It also decreases energy levels and increases hunger & cravings. This combination is the perfect recipe for weight gain as you will be moving/exercising less and eating more.

3️⃣ FERTILITY ISSUES
Insulin resistance can cause many issues around fertility such as ovulation irregularities, not having periods, having periods only frequently, or having an irregular length of time between periods.

It can also reduce egg size and quality further limiting the chances of falling pregnant and having a healthy birth.

A holistic approach to diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, and being smart with your supplementation is the best approach for reducing insulin resistance.
