50% of Women with PCOS Will Develop Prediabetes by The Age Of 40
50% of women with PCOS will develop prediabetes or diabetes by the age of 40. The link between the two conditions is found via how your body responds to and uses the hormone insulin.
Type II diabetes develops due to insulin resistance, a condition I speak about often here on this page due to its prevalence among women with PCOS. Being overweight or obese, another common symptom of PCOS is another risk factor for Type II diabetes.
There have also been a few recent studies that found a link between PCOS and Type II diabetes regardless of body weight, diet, and level of exercise.
Early signs of diabetes include:
⚠️ Blurry vision
⚠️ Frequent need to urinate
⚠️ Increased thirst and/or hunger
⚠️ Patches of especially dark skin
⚠️ Numbness in the hands or feet
Medications such as Metformin, which is a diabetes medication that is also often prescribed to women with PCOS are designed to help your body better utilize insulin and therefore, minimizing insulin resistance.
Current lifestyle recommendations for PCOS and Type II diabetes also often overlap one another.
👉 Minimize sugar & processed food intake
👉 Reduce overall carbohydrate intake
👉 Partaker in regular exercise
👉 Be smart with your supplementation. Supplements that help with blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity are especially helpful.
👉 Get quality sleep!
👉 Manage your emotional & physical stress levels
If you are concerned speak with your doctor about getting screened.
